The school admits pupils in accordance with the criteria and guidance issued by the Local Education Authority. Parental wishes are considered, current family association (an older brother or sister at the school at the time of entry), and the nearness of the child's home and ease of access to the school. If a child applying for a place at the school has acute medical needs, advice may be sought from the Area Health Authority to ensure that the placement will most appropriately serve the needs of the child.
Most of the children in our Foundation Stage already attend Hersden's Under 5s Project which is housed on our site. During the Summer term we have a full programme of induction for all children coming into our Foundation Stage class.
A meeting is held for the 'new' parents when the admission procedure is outlined, along with school rules and routines. A tour of the School is followed by refreshments and the opportunity to meet informally with staff and ask questions.
At present, there are 4 classes, with approximately 80 children on roll. We have a Foundation Stage class where pupils are admitted on a part-time basis in September, with the aim of being full-time after a period of two weeks. This arrangement is flexible as some parents are reluctant for their children to attend full time before they are five. There is no statutory need for them to do so.
It is extremely important for us to ensure that each child has a happy and positive introduction to school life, in which the child feels safe and secure in a caring environment. We value the relationship with parents, which we see as vital to enable the children to settle quickly into their new surroundings. Some children find this difficult (as do some parents!), but by working together we can quickly overcome any anxieties that may arise.
The admissions policy for the school is determined by the LEA, only comes into effect if a particular year group is full and we need to prioritise a waiting list. The priority order is:
Parents who move into the area are very welcome to visit the school. It is important that you see the environment in which your child will be learning, in order for you to make the right decision about the school that you wish your child to attend. Please telephone the school to make a mutually convenient appointment. The Executive Headteacher or head of School will show you round and will be happy to discuss issues during the visit. Children are very welcome to attend.
You will also have the opportunity to discuss your child's abilities, interests, educational progress, and to talk about issues that may be of concern. The school policy for admitting children transferring from other schools during term time is to admit them as soon as is practical following an interview with the parents, taking into account individual circumstances. Time needs to be allowed for the class teacher to prepare for a new entrant and information to be sent from the previous school.
